An Inmate Equips His Niece to Start DBSes on a College Campus

During a recent update from inside prison, one of our disciple-makers named Ireland shared something extraordinary. While faithfully leading Discovery Bible Studies behind the walls, he began sharing what he was learning with his niece, a brand-new college student.

Inspired by her uncle’s example, she started gathering friends on campus. What began as one conversation quickly multiplied. Today, she is leading a Discovery Making Community group with 22 college students—all because of the coaching, encouragement, and disciple-making habits passed on to her from inside prison.

What’s remarkable is how natural this multiplication has been. Ireland didn’t see himself as a “missionary to the nations,” but his simple obedience created a ripple effect that extended far beyond the prison yard. His niece didn’t wait until she felt “ready”—she simply shared what she had learned and invited others to discover God’s Word with her.

This is the vision of the Freedom Initiative in action: men and women behind bars becoming disciple-makers whose impact spreads into families, neighborhoods, and even college campuses.
